The day started at 4:00am at Dana Landing with the HUB team setting up for the tournament. A few boats were already lined up ready for tournament. Registration went smoothly, Captain/Anglers bags were given out, and fresh donuts and coffee for all. The tournament started at Safe Light and at 6:15am Anglers could begin to log in their catches. We used the iAngler app which allows an Angler to catch, measure, photograph and release their fish. It was important to Hookup Baits and CCA CAL that all bass were released. The results started flowing in as we all watched the leader board in each division. 11am the Casting Contest began. This was for our Groms (17 and younger) to see how well they could cast and for accuracy. We had (12) participants. In the Division 12 and younger, Tanner took 1st place with a total distance of 84.7 and 10 points for accuracy. Paul Vasguez from the Grom 13-17 Division took 1st place with a distance of 102 and 5 points for accuracy. Afterwards even adults and HUB team members tried their hand at this contest which was a lot of fun. Lunch was provided by Tarantino Sausage, so as Anglers came off the water they had a delicious meal to enjoy. This was also a great time to sit with our participants and volunteers to exchange fishing stories and have lots of laughs. The raffle was set up between 11-2 and what amazing prizes we had. Congrats to Cash Troop for being the October's Grom of the Month! As you can see, his passion for fishing is what makes everything we do worth it! There's nothing better than getting notes from parents and grandparents, also excited for Cash! Priceless! "It’s company’s like Hook Up Baits that understand that the youth is the future of our country and provide the opportunities to set goals and work hard at something." - Tom Troop, Cash's Father "I have to share with you the pride and gratitude we are feeling right now. We are the Grandparents of Cash Troop who won the Grom of the Month, and came in third in this Tournament. To see his excitement and sense of accomplishment is priceless. Nothing compares to the feeling of seeing your grandchild so overjoyed and hugging complete strangers in public with no reservation! Thank you again for having a wonderful organization that truly is a positive example for our youth, and likely farther reaching than you may have imagined. Hookup Baits has definitely made the top of the list for our Annual Contributions." - Dan & Gloria Milich, Cash's Grandparents Check out the video to see just how much Cash loves fishin'! #hookupbaits #gromofthemonth #GOTM Now the Groms that were not chosen, your name stays in the bucket and if you post again this month you will be added to the bucket again. A message from Debbie Patenaude, Wow Chairman: I believe this was our very best WOW trip yet! After deliberating with Captain Taro, weighing the pros and cons, we chose to go to the Coronado Island in preference to offshore tuna fishing, hoping to make sure everyone got fish. So, early, 4:15 am, on Wednesday, September 26th, our SDA volunteers, Alisa, Bobby, Norm, Mike Kezele, Rudy, Dwayne, Debbie, Steve Carson all set with multiple Bonito rigs, and Chad, with plenty of Hookup Baits to go around, the others bearing rods to share showed up at Fisherman's Landing ready to welcome our warriors. We thought we would be there before our WOW anglers but we underestimated how excited they were! Many showed up very early! About 5:30 am, after all the paperwork was completed, Taro headed us toward the Islands. Calm seas and no one got sick. It seemed that in no time we had a quadruple hook up on Bonito, which happened nearly every time we moved the boat. The guys really had to work at getting the fish in with a moving boat! This gave them a chance to show off their muscles, amid cheers and laughter. We caught 27 different species (thank you Steve for tracking this for us), and everyone got several fish. We caught everything from Tree Fish to Tuna. One of the guys even got the nickname of the Yellowtail Whisperer after catching one Yellowtail and hooking 2 others. We headed in, tired, happy, and full from [...]

Who is Al Vazquez? I have been a fishing since I have been old enough to do it. Growing up I always loved fishing. Throughout my years as a fisherman I would have considered myself a yellowtail and tuna type of guy. But now I have found my passion in salt water bass fishing. The fishing bug is imbedded within me, I can never seem to get enough fishing time in on the water. I find myself fishing as hard the last ten minutes of the day as I did the first cast of the morning, I simply love the grind. The suspense of not knowing what will bite on the other end of my line with my next cast keeps me motivated to keeping going sunup to sundown. What I feel separates me from another fisherman is my open mind. I am always willing to learn, adapt, adjust, and even experiment on the fly. This allows me to constantly push myself to become a better fisherman and overall catch better quality fish, but it isn’t always about me catching fish, I’ve learned that you must be selfless before you can be selfish. Not only do I enjoy catching fish myself but teaching and helping others catch fish is truly gratifying. Why did you come up with Mermaids Milk? Mermaids Milk was created for our tournament fishing as well as to specifically meet the needs of the Hookup Baits. There are many other good fishing scents out there, but Mermaids Milk [...]
Written by Jojo Evelyn L. Breech loved to fish! It didn’t matter if it was freshwater or saltwater, Grandma loved being on the water. Some of her favorite places to fish were the Colorado River, Martinez Lake - north of Yuma, and San Felipe Baja, Mexico. I remember many weekends where Grandma Evelyn and my mom would head out in Grandma’s boat for a fishing tournament with the Yuma Women’s Reel and Rifle Club. They won many awards because they were a great team! If Grandma wasn’t fishing, then she was buying fishing pole blanks. She set up a special table where she would sit and wrap fishing poles for fresh and saltwater. She used them for her own personal fishing, different tournaments, and gave many to family members as gifts. I have so many wonderful memories of fishing with my mom, dad, and Grandparents. Grandma Evelyn has passed away, but I treasure each and every handmade pole she made. Every fishing bag that has her initials “ELB” written on it reminds me of her and I hope to carry on the passion of the sport of fishing being a third-generation woman that loves to fish. I know if Grandma Evelyn was here today she would be Hookup Baits' biggest cheerleader out there on the water fishing with the baits. In her honor, for our 1st Hookup Baits tournament to be held on October 6, 2018, my parents gave me many boxes of trophies that were won by my Grandma [...]
Spent a few days last week filming all new instructional videos with Cameron Jonas. We found an area of yellowtail, tuna and big bonita that we were able to put a hurting on. We got some great footage. The next day we fished the bay and Cameron got a nice bay Sand bass. Always a great time fishing and filming with this kid! Congrats to Newport Artifical Crew for being the chosen Grom of the month for September. They were stoked on the Fishworks, Dinkskwad and Hookupbaits swag and also on the day of fishing. Fishing was a little slower then normal. We started out doing a short loop outside looking for some close tuna or skipjacks with no luck then found our way to La Jolla. There was plenty of the standard size calicos biting, but no yellows. Then I asked them if they want fish to take home and they said yes, so I took them to a shallow water rock fish spot and showed them how rockfishing Hookupbaits style is done. We got 3 small black sea bass and some big reds along with some more calico and sand bass. All in all, a good day. I love taking these youngsters out and getting them hooked up. Nice getting to know you and fishin' with you boys. #hookupbaits #gromofthemonth #fishworksclothing #dinkskwad #shimanofishing Thank you Fishworks Clothing & DInk SKwad for the swag for the Groms.
