We have put together a list of the most popular baits, techniques, and suggestions for your springtime fishing. Though these are suggestions based on what we found most effective all colors that we offer can be used and work.

Sierras Trout Opener

Target Species-Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat, Brook & Brown Trout
1/32 & 1/16 oz Hookup Baits in Black Gold, Brown Gold, Red Crab, Shad White, and Yellow White. Adding Mermaids Milk Garlic Scent to the bait helps with a 2 or 4 lb. line on an ultralight rod with a spinning reel.

Freshwater Bass Fishing

Target Species-Large and Small Mouth Bass, Striped Bass
Majority of the bait fish in the lakes are small during the Spring. For best results match the hatch with the 1/16 & 1/8 oz. Hookup Baits Chovy, Sardine Green, Mint, Shad White, and Brown Gold.

The replacement bodies Texas weedless rigged freelined like a fluke or on a drop shot filled with Mermaids Milk can also be deadly.

For Stripers throw the 1 oz. Big Game in Chovy, or Shad White.

Light to Medium set up with 6-10 lb line for large and smallmouth bass. Medium set up with a 10-20 lb line for Stripers.

Bay Fishing

Target Species-Spotted Bay Bass, Sand Bass, Calico Bass & Halibut
While targeting the bay bass bite in the spring, we experience the bonus of Halibut coming into the bays to spawn.

1/4, 3/8 & 5/8 oz. Hookup Baits are the sizes you want depending on depth and current. Sardine Green, Mint, Chovy, Glow Green, Shad White, and Brown/Gold.

Medium weight set up with a 8-20 lb line.

Rockfish & Lingcod Fishing

Target Species-Vermilion and Lingcod
We are talking rock fishing with light gear and double rigged Hookup Baits here. If you haven’t tried this new way of rock fishing your missing out. It’s lots of fun and a great way to put good eating fish on the table.

Rockfish & Lingcod Fishing

Target Species-Vermilion and Lincod Continued
Start with a #2, 3-way Owner Swivel. (we sale them on our online store). Add 2, 1.5 oz. Big Game or Bullet Hookup Baits for catching rockfish. Or for trophy-sized reds and Lingcod double rig a 3, 4, or 6 oz. Hookup Baits (depending on depth and speed of drift) with a 1 or 1.5 oz. Big Game or Bullet HUB. Smaller bait on a shorter leader. 1st leader should be 2’ in length, 2nd leader should be 2 ½’ in length. Popular colors are Red Crab, Sardine Green, Mint, Purple Silver, Glow Green, and Brown Gold. Check out our instructional videos on YouTube and our site labeled rock fishing and double rig.

Medium to heavy set up with a 25-40 lb line.

Channel Islands

Target Species-(WSB) White Seabass
Hookup Baits have been the bait of choice for the White Sea Bass over the last 3 years. The Original 5/8 Red Crab has been the king of this bite! This year we introduced at Fred Hall Long Beach a proven and highly effective bait called the new WSB Special HUB. This bait is still 5/8 oz. and 4 inches but now with a 3/0 3× strong hook that will handle any White Sea Bass hooked on it. The new WSB Special comes in Red Crab and Mint. We recommend fishing the Red Crab in low light conditions or when the fish are eating the Red Crabs and the Mint for when the fish are on Fin bait and bright conditions.

Medium to heavy set up with a 20-40 lb. line.

Coronado, Catalina, San Clemente Islands

Target Species-Yellowtail, Calico Bass, Sheephead and Rockfish
We have found using the 1 oz. HUB Bullet or Big Game baits in Mint, Sardine Green, Chovy, or Red Crab have been very effective.

Trolling the HUB Bullet around the island, at 3-4 miles per hour, has been very effective in locating the Yellowtail. 1 oz. Red Crab Bullets with Crustacean Mermaids Milk is exceptionally effective for Sheephead.

Medium to heavy set up with a 25-40 lb. line. FG Knot is recommended to use leader to braid connection.

Remember adding the Mermaids Milk into all our baits for all fish always helps. The scent is offered in Garlic, Crustacean, and Fin Bait.
