This article originally appeared on June 18, 2019 in Fresno Bee by Roger George. Chad and Al only used Hookup Baits and the most popular was the 1 oz Chovy Big Game and 1 oz Mint Big Game were the ticket. - Jojo A recent two-day fishing trip to San Luis Reservoir with two professional saltwater tournament anglers, Chad Gierlich and Al Vasquez of San Diego and Hookup Baits, reinforced the fact that you never know what’s going to happen on the water. DAY 1 Roger George is The Bee’s fishing expert. The wind was blowing like crazy. It was about 11:30 a.m. before they opened the lake and we launched from Dinosaur and headed for Portuguese Cove for some wind protection in medium 10-15 mph wind. We began fishing some flats and points. The fish were clearly suspended and inactive but we keep trolling – catching one here and there. Chad finally had a good fish hit that went a personal-best 30 inches. Two hours later the wind came up suddenly and the waves got bigger. I headed for the western shore where the waves are the least and then skirted along it back to Dinosaur. This is the safest strategy to use in a hard west wind. The now 30 mph-plus wind was throwing the spray back into the boat every few seconds. We were all dripping, totally soaked. I looked over and Chad and Al were laughing; this was nothing for a saltwater angler, they [...]
We are very sad to say that a dear HUB family member passed away Wednesday night. This was a huge surprise to all of us here at Hookup Baits. Mario Martin started at Hookup Baits February 2018 and managed our packaging and inventory department. He had high standards of what each package should look like before it went out to our customers as well as took hours making sure our inventory count was correct. We recently had each employee review themselves and here is what Mario wrote on his own review this month: On a scale from 1 (being that you hate coming to work) to 10 (excited to come to work) how do you feel about coming to work each day? Mario responded: "10" Given your daily responsibility please list what you feel you are best at and why? Mario responded: "detail oriented with numbers and inventory as well as the packaging department". We could not agree with Mario more that his attention to detail was very much noticed and appreciated. We also wanted to share that often on Fridays the boys would gather to have a Q & A at the shop. One would ask a question and if the others did not get it right the person that asked the question got to keep the Hookup Baits. Mario always had the most interesting and fascinating questions to ask. The boys tried to answer them, but eventually we all stopped trying to answer and simply let Mario give [...]

Thank you, Captain Neal Baker, for these awesome photos. We appreciate your support! Stuck a nice limit of halibut yesterday on Humboldt Bay. All three fish came on the Hookup Bait pictured. I know your baits are not in stores anywhere up here, but if interested maybe I could assist in getting em into some of our local bait shops. There’s a fairly large market up here. I fish almost exclusively plastics for most of my fishing and I do have my token go to baits, but I’ve been fishing the hookup baits a lot lately and they do not disappoint. Feel free to contact me, Thanks!

Great time out on the water with June's Grom of the month, Miguel and his big bro Javier. Got these boys out to the islands and they proceeded to put the hurt on the Cudas. All you wanted Cudas and lots of Calicos was the action all day. I think the smiles on their faces say it all. Thanks to the gear from Grom of the Month sponsors Fishworks Clothing, Angler Clothing Company, and Fishgroms. Thank you! Check out the original post on Facebook or share from our Facebook page! Such an honor and privilege to fish against the best saltwater bass teams out there. Nothing makes you try harder and learn more than fishing against talent like this. That being said, actually winning is a huge blessing for us. The Saltwater Bass Series Championship 2-day tournament seems to be our event that we do well at. Winning by weight 3 years straight! Last year a dead fish penalty moved us to 2nd place by 4 tenths of an ounce. That one still hurts. We made sure to take great care of our fish this year. Fishing was good for us as we stuck to our plan both days and everything worked out. My tournament partner, Al, was there for his dad who had been struggling with cancer this whole season. Al never missed a tournament, but I can tell my long time fishing buddy wasn't at his best...understandably. Sadly his dad passed a couple weeks ago, so this one was for Al senior. RIP my friend. Al was back this weekend and we both put lots of quality fish on the boat with Al getting a 2.96 lb Spottie and one slightly smaller on Sunday. Way to go brother! On day one the 1.5 & 3 oz baits worked for us, catching Calico & Sand Bass. On day 2, Spotties only, the 1/4 oz. baits were the ticket. This shows how effective and versatile the Hookup Baits truly are. Thank you again to Gerry and crew of the SBS [...]
